Fly Fishing – River Carron
January 22, 2008
Once a river devastated by pollution from the paper mill industries, when you look at the river its recovery is nothing short of amazing.
The local fishing club have done wonders with this water. They have an excellent stocking policy of large brown trout, every year the sea trout and salmon runs are stronger and stronger.
The river allows for bait and fly fishing, this is a river I fish often in the summer as I have to drive past it on my way home and I always keep my fly rod in the car. This season was no exception.
Flies
The best flies we found were small Scottish traditional fished downstream; there is an abundance of pools. We did find that fishing further down stream brought results, the section of the river at deny and Falkirk is fished heavily so we tried down past the “swing bridge” at Larbert. The water is deeper in a lot of sections and you have to fish from the shore unless you are really brave. However the effort is well worth it, as this section of the river is not stocked, it’s wild brown trout you will be chasing.
The most successful trip we had was in late august around 5pm in the evening, with 6 trout the largest being just over a trout, we found the back spider and black pennel the most successful flies fished down stream on a floating line in a team of three flies.
We found this river to teaming with lots of small brown trout about 6inch long which must be viewed as an encouraging site, in fact we managed to catch around 20 (all of which were safely returned to the water)
This is an inexpensive river to fish with permits costing the same as a day ticket at a fishery but instead of a day you get the whole season. In our opinion this is a fantastic river for fly fishing for wild and stocked trout, sea trout and salmon
