It is quite common for an angler to wander into a tackle shop with the intent of purchasing some line. However, as he wades through the shear volume of choices and begins to feel a little confused, it is most likely that he would opt for the cheapest and be done with it! This is because lines appear to be pretty much the same when you look at them on the spool. So, when you see one that sells for ?15.99 and compare it to another that retails for ?4.99, with the same quantity of line on the spool, you could be forgiven for choosing to save ?10!
Nevertheless, lines do vary, and some to a greater extent than others when it comes to the way they behave when being cast, the breaking strain, diameter, actual knot strength and abrasion resistance. Quality lines do come at a premium price but it is always worth the few extra pennies, because the last thing you want is for a line to let you down when you are playing the fish of a lifetime. Sakuma Nite Crystal does not cost the earth, yet offers way more than the price suggests.
It comes in a low diameter with a higher breaking strain than many other lines of the same diameter. For example, the 0.33mm Nite Crystal has a breaking strain of 16lb, whereas many other lines of the same diameter would come in at about 12lb. Not only is it strong, it is also of relatively low stretch, but at the same time supple and soft, which means that it will pay off a reel perfectly when cast and lay on the spool well when reeled back in.
I have used Nite Crystal for quite some time now and have found it excellent – it’s my primary casting line for the field! I have less fraps using this line than any other that I have used, and this can be the difference between a good performance and a great performance. With regard to fishing with it, Nite Crystal is perfect because of its high breaking strain and low diameter.
This combination allows me to cast as far as I can, yet still be able to rely on the line when reeling in a good fish or hitting a snag. I use the 0.33/16lb line and I have had no problems with premature breakages.
Plus, I can easily straighten hooks with it on a pull so that I am able to get my gear back out of a snag.
